For Headliner Highlight 12, we hear from Jon Solberg from The Best Moments of the BBQ Central Show in Ten Minutes or Less.
Tell us about your podcast.
Hi, my name is Jon Solberg and I am the producer for The Best Moments of the BBQ Central Show in Ten Minutes or Less. I think that this podcast is a bit unique, as it’s actually a best of show for The BBQ Central Show.
The BBQ Central Show is a live internet show. It airs for two hours a week, and discusses all things important in the world of barbecuing and grilling. Once the live show happens, it is broken down into podcast episodes and distributed out throughout the week.
The Best Moments of the BBQ Central Show in Ten Minutes or Less is released in two ten-minute segments edited from the archives of The BBQ Central Show.
Why did you start podcasting?
I started podcasting because I found it to be an exciting medium. And it was a way that I could deliver some extra value to a forum that I operated at that time. I’ve been involved with The Best Moments of the BBQ Central Show in Ten Minutes or Less since its inception in 2018.
How do you promote your episodes?
This podcast goes into The BBQ Central Show podcast feed. It is also posted on the BBQ Central show main website. And then all of our social media platforms receive a notification of a new episode with a call to action to take people back to the main website.
What has been most effective? Least effective?
I find this to be a difficult question. I think the promotion of podcasts is still a bit like the wild wild west.
I think the most effective way to promote your podcast is to be consistent with its production and release. Put it out there every week and promote it across your social media platforms.
Why do you make Headliners?
The number one reason I make Headliners is that I think that they’re fun.
The first time I ever saw [an] audiogram I was like, “What is this? I need to find out what this is.” Then I stumbled on Headliner. They’re fun to make. They get great reach on social media, and they’re very entertaining. I can’t say enough good things about Headliner. I really enjoy making my Headliner videos every week.
What’s your current podcasting setup?
The tools that I use to produce a podcast are a Shure SM7B through a DBX286S into an interface and Garageband.
What is something you think is overrated or underrated in podcasting?
The time required to produce a podcast consistently.
People say, “I wanna do a podcast!” and I say, You need to commit some time. It’s going to be a weekly ongoing thing for you. And there will be weeks when you don’t want to do a podcast and you just need to suck it up and get in front of that microphone.
If someone was to only listen to one episode of yours, which one would you send?
I definitely wouldn’t send them the first one. As much as I love that one, I would send them a later episode, as hopefully things improve as you produce podcast episodes.
Podcasts are like children, and I have the unique benefit of pulling best-of clips from another show. I think that all of the podcasts are good. I would say that I love them all equal, but separately.
Do you have a favorite podcast?
A favorite podcast of mine, other than my own, is WTF with Marc Maron. I think that podcast brings a lot of entertainment value to me. It exposes me to different concepts, thoughts and things that I normally wouldn’t have thought about.
