For Headliner Highlight 22, we hear from J. Rodney Turner of the Audiobook Narration For Beginners podcast.
Tell us about your podcast.
My name is J. Rodney Turner, and I’m a voice actor, concentrating on audiobook narration. I began my podcast Audiobook Narration for Beginners in January of this year, 2019.
Why did you start podcasting?
My purpose is to provide new narrators or those who are thinking about becoming a narrator with information gathered from interviews with working professionals, coaches, audio experts, and other industry insiders, which I hope will help them with their audiobook narration career or in making the decision, “should I narrate or not?”
What do you do to share & promote your episodes?
The promotion of my podcast episode is fairly simple. I create a Headliner audiogram of about a minute or less of audio from an upcoming interview or episode, and I post that video using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
Could I do more? Sure I could. But for now, I’m tracking the podcast, and while the audience is currently fairly small, the feedback from that small audience is universally positive. I know that my audience is a small niche group. Still, the information is valuable to them, and anecdotal information obtained from working pros is that the information can also be valuable to the narrator’s who may be more experienced and may need a refresher on areas of interest that helps build a thriving career in audiobook narration.
Why do you make Headliners?
Using Headliner is simply a no-brainer for me. It’s almost too easy that not using it seems like just bad decision making for my business. And who wants that?
Current Podcasting Setup?
My podcast is created out of a professional recording studio within the confines of my home. I use my everyday narration set up to produce the podcast, my iMac, my 22 audio interface with my Neumann U 87 microphone, and recording on Ocean audio workstation.
If someone was to only listen to one episode of yours, which one would you send?
It would probably be “Episode One: Getting Started” or Episode Six, which is part one of a three part interview with narrator and coach Sean Allen Pratt.
